The Gower Salt Marshes are a unique environment, as these wild pastures contain a natural abundance of Samphire, Sorrel, Sea lavender & Thrift.
Will, Dan and their father Rowland Pritchard raise all their Welsh Lamb at home: Weobley Castle Farm, Llanrhidian, Gower.
When the lambs are around 3 weeks old, they are released onto the marshes of the northern peninsular of Gower, which is also common land and part of the first designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty. The Gower Salt Marshes are a unique environment, as these wild pastures contain a natural abundance of Samphire, Sorrel, Sea lavender & Thrift. These wonderful sources of nourishment give Gower Salt Marsh Lamb its distinctive and special flavour, which is highly sought after by many top chefs and restaurants.
The Pritchard family manage approximately 700 lambs, the largest herd on this part of the estuary at Loughor. Traditional Suffolk and Welsh breeds of sheep are reared as they suit the marsh environment. Lambs need to be nimble to jump over the pills (or little rivers) of the marsh.The Pritchard's transport the sheep, to a local Welsh Lamb-accredited abattoir, a mere 3 miles away, they then expertly butcher the Lamb at Weobley Castle.
In August 2021, Will, Dan and Rowland were delighted to be the first recipient of the PDO award. A proud moment, the award put their unique product on the map, with UK and global media interest. Gower Salt Marsh Lamd & Mutton is now on par with champagne and other wonderful products.
